10:30 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. Workshop: Appalachian Clogging / Flatfooting
Flatfooting is a percussive dance style derived from the clogging of Scotch-Irish immigrants in and around the Appalachian mountains, blended with influences from the Africans and Cherokee Indians in that region. It is usually done to “old-time” mountain music. While definitions vary, flatfooting is often distinguished from performance or competition clogging in that it is more free-form, individualized, and less choreographed.
Break for lunch
1:30 - 2:40 p.m. Workshop: Contra Flourishes
Asheville has become famous (or perhaps infamous) for the prevalence of contra flourishes imported from swing dancing. This “playshop” introduces basic swing dance moves for a contra context, including the critical skills of timing (being ready for the next move), tailoring to your partner's skill and preferences, keeping it safe, and the fine art of good judgement (when to go for the showy moves, and when not).
3:00 - 4:45 p.m. Workshop: Advanced Contra
De-mystifying the mysterious; challenging dances made easy. “Learn universal truths about shadows and buddies, multiple progression, figuring out end effects, and other high level skills that will make you a more advanced dancer overall.”

Just listening? We understand that some people may not be dancers, or may love to dance but be sidelined by injury or aging bodies, but still be into the music and the dance community. But it costs money to bring in nationally known musicians and rent the hall, even if nobody dances. So our policy is that if you are just there to listen, you can get in for the student rate (except of course for the Sunday Concert, where full admission still applies).

Pre-registration is available for the full weekend only. It is not required - you can pay at the door. You can pre-register here online using Credit Card or PayPal. Mail-in registration is now closed. If you have already mailed in registration, we will confirm receipt via the email or phone number you provide when it arrives. If you do not receive confirmation before the dance weekend, you will need to pay at the door, and we will shred or return the mail-in registration if it later arrives.

Cancellation Policy: If a pre-registration is cancelled before November 1, 50% of the entry fee will be refunded.

Payment at the door accepted via cash, check, or credit card.
